To add subscript in Microsoft Word, you can use various methods:

  1. With keyboard shortcuts:

    • Select the text or character for subscript formatting.
    • Press Ctrl and = at the same time (Windows) or Command + Shift + - (Mac).
  2. Using the Font dialog box:

    • Select the text or character.
    • On the Home tab in the Font group, click the Font Dialog Box Launcher (an arrow in the bottom-right corner).
    • In the Effects section, check the "Subscript" box.
    • Click "OK" to confirm.
  3. Applying superscript or subscript from the Direct Format Controls:

    • Select the text or number.
    • On the Home tab in the Font group, click the Superscript or Subscript button accordingly.
  4. For special characters, like the trademark symbol, use the Symbol box:

    • Click where you want to insert the symbol.
    • On the Insert tab, click Symbol.
    • Select (normal text) from the Font drop-down list.
    • In the Subset drop-down list, select Superscripts and Subscripts.
    • Choose the symbol you want and click Insert.

For equation editor tasks, like in LaTeX or Word's built-in equation editor, you can use the following shortcuts:

  • For superscript: Place the cursor after the character you want to be superscript and type ^ followed by the desired text.
  • For subscript: Place the cursor after the character you want to be subscripted, and type an underscore _ followed by the desired text.

Undoing superscript or subscript formatting is easily done by selecting the text and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar.
